Identity

Chapter 1

IDENTITY

We don't even know how strong we are until we are forced to bring that hidden strength forward. In times of tragedy, of war, of necessity, people do amazing things. The human capacity for survival and renewal is awesome.

Isabel Allende

It is often said that the most difficult task for human beings to perform is “thinking”. We take ourselves for granted on who we are, what we are capable of doing and most times fail to challenge our innate capabilities. The task of self-analysis is one that most people fail to take. We subsequently end up populating the graveyard with wasted dreams, unexplored imagination, unrealized potentials, boundless wishes, untapped visions and unused talents.

Philosophers are great thinkers. We look at a couple of philosophical statements to help us on our journey.

We begin the work on identity by asking “Who am I?”

Rene Descartes, a French philosopher and one of the founders of modern philosophy made a profound Latin statement “Cogito, ergo sum”, translated in English to mean “I think, therefore I am”. Going by this statement confirms our existence as a living being. By asking the question “Who am I?”, we initiate the thinking process first and our ability to start thinking confirms we are living beings.

Another great French Philosopher and Jesuit priest, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881 – 1955) stated “We are spiritual beings having a human experience.

With the myriad of strangeness in our world, It makes absolute sense to question our spiritual existence and the reason we are here to have a human experience.

The solution to reinventing ourselves lies in how well we can engage our thinking process to provide the answers we need to navigate our change to our personalized destination of self-fulfilment.

So, I want to take this time to appeal to you, as you're embarking on this course, to embrace the thinking process deeply as we have lots to answer.
